The ADI 1035 Bio Console Basic Module

The Bio Console integrates all the necessary peripheral equipment to run and control a bioprocess. Since the unit is modular, it can be configured to accept only those modules necessary to carry out the control a specific bioprocess. If the process control strategy should change the Bio Console can be easily reconfigured by adding or changing modules.

General Description:
The basic Bio Console is configured to accept 3 fixed speed pumps and one variable speed pump. The pump heads which are added to these drives are peristaltic tubing pumps and are available in various sizes. The Bio Console accepts up to 4 rotameter flow tubes. The flow range and gas type can be specified for the application, as required. Each rotameter provides a needle valve for manual adjustment of gas flow. A separate 3-way valve allows the operator to select gas flow to the sparger or gas overlay. A third position allows the ga flow to be shut off. In addition, solenoid valves are available for each rotameter to control gas flow as a function of dissolved oxygen or pH setpoint.

As an option the rotameter assemblies can be replaced with mass flow controllers. The Bio Console can accept up to 4 mass flow controllers, of various capacities. Two of these mas flow controllers can be controlled remotely by the ADI 1030 Bio Controller. The Bio Console also can incorporate a motor speed controller, foam controller and temperature controller. For temperature control, several options are available. A thermocirculator can be installed which allows water to flow to the heat exchanger or jacket of the bioreactor. As an alternative, a heating blanket or heating element can be plugged into the Bio Console. For cooling purposes, a cold water solenoid valve can be installed. A foam controller may be installed in the Bio Console which frees up additional space in the Bio Controller for measurement and/or control of another parameter.

All devices described above are controlled from the ADI 1030 Bio Controller which installed above the Bio Console.

The basic Bio Console includes all the necessary connections for water supply, gas supply and power. Manifolds allow mixing of gases. Water supplies are also brought to a manifold and a separate connection is provided for cold water supply to the air outlet condenser. A central power supply switch controls power to the various modules as well as the Bio Controller. The power section of the Bio Console also includes fusing for protection of the Bio Console and all components. An "alarm" LED is provided which can be used to provide a general alarm status based on sensor input signals.
